Saint Etienne... not only the fabulous and classy soundtrack to half my life, but hey were there during various breakups, deaths, heartache, joy, kittens being born, falling in love, sitting on rooftops on summerevenings with a spliff and a few beers whilst watching the sun go down, many great concerts, and, they are also a very lovely and kind bunch of people, always taking time to chat to fans, sings stuff, shake hands, pose for pics, etc. I hope they’ll go on and on and on... but knowing how incredibly productive they are, that is a very likely option.
Saint Etienne are one of my favorite bands but I just can't wrap my head around Continental. Something about the production and songwriting just sounds "dated", while everything else they've done, to me, sounds "timeless" or "vintage". But wow aside from that one album their discography is flawless
Continental isn't a studio album - it was a compilation of various songs and tracks for the Japanese market. It was mostly made up of unreleased songs and demos recorded between 1994 - 1996 that hadn't appeared elsewhere, especially Japan.
this band is incapable of making a bad album. Finisterre is the only one that doesn't quite work for me, but it's hard to be be negative about an album with a song as perfect as Stop and Think It Over on it
I find Home Counties to be disappointing. It grew on me in the last year but it's nothing compare to Tales From Turnpike House or even Words And Music. I also found Sound Of Water to be very average. I just realised that I finally have access to Finisterre. Hopefully I will enjoy it more than you!
I read a review once of Sound of Water that said it was a good album, but the reviewer hoped they wouldn't make another like it. Like it was a bit of a creative dead-end. Which I can agree with, but I like it for it's mellow sound. It gets by on atmosphere and production rather than tunes. It took me a little while to take to Words and Music actually, At first I thought they'd lost it. But I was glad to be proven wrong!
I got this book after reading ur comment. Didn't finished reading despite the fact i have it almost a year on my ipad. I read mostly part IV w/ disco, post punk, new wave etc, come to conclusion that B.Stanley is obsessed with history of pop music, but I really like reading personal reflections on this topics. Very dissapointed to see Prince sharing his space with Madonna. I get the context - book is already heavy, but still... Prince is his own category, he can wipe the floor with MJ & Madonna 2gether. :) Btw, what are ur thoughts on this latest SE album?
They started podcast around 2007/8 i think... and Prince himself listened ep. on that podcast, so... let that speak for itself. And yes, the show has dynamic and it is entertaining most of the time cuz opinons are usually very differ. I listened maybe 7-8 show, mainly stuff from new millennium - rainbow children, 3121, musicology + some top lists. Not sure about their background, need to listen more shows to discover, but there is one member who call himself a 'player', probably a musician, i found his insights on certain songs and momenets very intresting. Ar U on RYM or some similar place for music?
Saint Etienne fans should check out Hafdis Huld who is another amazing talented singer/songwriter like Sarah Cracknell. "Magic music. Every album." ~ AkihitoKonnichi
